Marine Weather Satellite Broadcast Service Description

- GK2A Marine Weather Satellite Broadcast Service (MWSB) Registration Form : request form download

1. Introduction

The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) has started marine weather broadcast service by GK2A satellite from 2020, which provides high-quality digital marine weather information to ships operating at sea. The KMA‘s marine weather broadcast service(MWSB) is a cutting-edge service that uses GK2A, it is the world’s only public satellite service dedicated to providing weather information free of charge with an aim of ensuring the safety of ships. Marine weather satellite broadcasting services can broadcast a lot of meteorological information such as color images, voice, and text message to ships.

Among the data provided by marine weather satellite broadcasting, marine emergency disaster information was currently provided to domestic users, but it is expanded to the Asia-Pacific region to provide marine weather information essential for maritime safety to areas with limited Internet communication as well as marine ships.

Users who wish to receive MWSB service should equip Small-scale Data Utilization Station(SDUS). If users equip SDUS, users can check MWSB service through smartphones, tablets and large monitors. SDUS specification is as follows (see Figure 2).

2. Service Request Guidelines

2.1 Service Overview

GK2A MWSB service allows NMHSs in the GK2A coverage area (herein referred to as “Users”) to request emergency disaster information(time and information) for MWSB service.

2.2 Basic Principles

I. Users’ requests may be rejected or suspended depending on circumstances within Korea or KMA.

II. The service is provided on a best-effort basis in consideration of operational limitation.

III. Users’ requests relating to emergency disaster information for earthquakes and tsunamis are prioritized over other users’ requests.

IV. The requested emergency disaster information shall be provided only once. If necessary, request again.

Ⅴ. The service requested by Users cannot be canceled, so it should be requested carefully.

2.3 Request Management

All users including in the RA-Ⅱ and RA-Ⅴ should submit a request directly to KMA via a dedicated web page. KMA shall assign priority in line with the Basic Principle 3 above. If this is impractical, KMA shall assign priority at its discretion. The related procedures are detailed in Section 2.5.

2.4 Registration

Before using the service, Users should submit a complete registration form specifying the e-mail address from which requests will be sent in order to enable validation by KMA.
